According to a clarification issued by the Salary & Remuneration Commission, SRC, teachers and caregivers in the field of early childhood development and education (ECDE) can now examine the full details of their salary. According to the Salary Review Commission, these teachers should not be paid a minimum of Ksh7,000 per month.
Remuneration Details for Personnel Employed in Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE)
The Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) Pay Structure has received inaccurate media coverage, and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) wishes to bring this to the public’s attention.
According to these reports, ECDE teachers’ earnings are lower than the federally authorized basic salary. The reports were misleading because they were based on basic income rather than gross salary.
According to the SRC, in December 2021, it suggested a gross salary of between Ksh 14,961 and Ksh 15,842 for Nairobi’s lowest cadre of ECDE teachers (Cluster 1) and between Ksh 13,211 and Ksh 14,092 for those in Cluster 4 (other locations).
This advice took the affordability and long-term viability of county governments’ pay bills into account.
In response to a request from county governments, SRC issued a clarification on the remuneration and benefits of ECDE teachers on January 13, 2023.
All public officers, including ECDE teachers, are now undergoing a salary review by the SRC as part of the third pay review cycle, with results expected in June 2023.
Salary and Compensation
Article 230 of Chapter 12 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 establishes the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC). The State SRC is charged with two primary responsibilities:
(a) Establishing and reviewing the salaries and benefits of all State officers
(b) Providing advice to national and county governments on the salaries and benefits of other public officers.
