Once a teacher has been employed by the TSC,he/ she does not remain in the starter job group forever. There is an automatic promotion after three years and then there is promotion depending on the performance.
When a teacher is promoted there is the possibility of increase in allowances offered by the Commission paid alongside salaries.
Allowances offered depend on various factors like;
- Job grade
- Responsibilities
- Type of learners handled
Most of the allowances are paid on monthly basis while others are one off.
Description of various allowances.
They are classified into two types:
1. Remunerative allowance – this is usually paid with the salary.
2. Reimbursable allowance.. this is refundable upon application
(A) Remunerative allowance is also subdivided into ;
- Automatic allowance
- Those paid upon application.
Automatic allowances includes
1. House allowance.
This is offered on monthly basis and it differs depending with job grade and workstation.
2. Medical allowance.
This is also deducted monthly from teachers and paid directly to various medical insurances.
3. Hardship
Teachers working in hostile areas for any reasons identified by the tsc are the beneficiaries of this allowance. Here teachers with higher job grade enjoy the most as it goes downwards.
4.Commuter allowance
It is paid on monthly basis depending on job grade as well.The higher the job grade the higher the allowance.
5.Leave allowance.
This is offered yearly together with January salary of the preceding year.it also depends on the job grade.
Allowance paid upon application are;
a) . Responsibility allowance
The sole beneficiaries of this allowance are:principals/ headteachers their deputies, senior teachers and those who fall under job group C3(initially job group k) and above.
b) . Special duty allowance
Teachers who fall under job group m and below can be appointed to administrative ranks and assigned positions by the commission and deployed to serve in hardship places like arid and semi arid areas.
c) . Readers allowance
This applies to visually and physically challenged tutors. Their minimum qualifications are normally kcse d+ or an equivalent of division iii. This allowance stands at a fixed scale and its prone to regular revision as deemed fit by the commission. The allowance rate in this category is in the upscale of 15,000
d) . Interpreters Allowance
Deaf teachers making use of stage interpreters while on study leave are legible to this special allowance
e). Special school allowance
Teachers who are experts in special needs education deployed ti handle learners in special schools are the ones legible for this special allowance
f) . Transfer Allowance
Teachers transfered to other stations by the commission benefit from this allowance. The allowance is usually equal to one’s one month basic pay

(B) . Reimbursable Allowance
That includes :
I. Travelling expenses
II. Quota per diem:
