The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) published 738 open positions for secondary school teachers in order to replace those who have left the profession for a variety of reasons, including natural attrition.
This year’s openings, which were announced in April, will be distributed across the entire country. The Central region has the most openings (163), followed by the Rift Valley region (159), according to the advertisement.
There are 125 posts available in the Eastern Region, 92 in the Western Region, and a total of 129 in the Nyanza Region.

At the same time, the Nairobi Region and the North Eastern Region have 24 and 11 teaching openings, respectively, while the Coastal Region has 35 openings.
A data bank of unemployed secondary school teachers was mentioned by TSC last year during the June-July recruitment period. This data bank will help the Commission find replacements for teachers who will leave the service during the 2022–2023 Financial Year (FY).
The Board of Management, which serves as the School Selection Panel, was tasked with creating a merit list unique to each open position from the list of five (5) candidates per opening who had been shortlisted and interviewed at every secondary school in the nation.
“The Merit List shall be used in the subsequent recruitment processes involving a similar vacancy in the County within the Financial Year or as directed by the Commission from time to time,” stated Dr. Macharia in the Circular.
The subject-specific merit lists from the school selection panels’ submissions to TSC SCD were then used to create a data bank for the County that would be used to fill subject-specific openings in subsequent recruitment processes throughout the FY.
The County Directors also had to provide the list to the Regional Director, who would build the regional merit lists for each topic and send them on to the TSC Director Staffing at the Headquarters.
“Those leaving service during the Financial Year will be replaced using this data bank of interviewed candidates. Dr. Macharia stated in the Financial Year that vacancies emerging from the County, Region, and nationally would be filled using the subject-specific data bank.
The Commission adds that vacancies must be filled from the Subject Specific National data bank when candidates are exhausted within a region and from the Subject Specific County data bank when candidates are exhausted within a region.
