TSC Allowances per Job Groupn2023-The TSC and teachers’ unions signed to a CBA in 2016, and it included slightly improved basic salary and allowances for teachers. Although a raise in basic pay favuored primarily administrators, teachers’ housing allowances were also significantly increased by the previous Salaries and Remuneration Commission.
In this article, I’ll take you through some TSC benefits for each job group that teachers enjoy, as well as how the house allowance varies depending on where they teach.
TSC Teacher Allowances
All teachers in Kenya employed by the TSC enjoy three allowances, namely;
- House allowance,
- Commuter allowance and
- Annual leave allowance.
TSC Allowances per Job Group-2023
TSC Hardship Allowance
Teachers in designated hardship zones in the following counties get a hardship allowance:
- Mandera County
- Marsabit County
- Kwale County
- Garissa County
- Wajir County
- West Pokot County
- Narok County
- Turkana County
- Kilifi County
- Isiolo County
- Lamu County
- Taita Taveta County
- Tana River County
- Samburu County
While classifying an area to be a hardship area, the locality must meet any of these conditions:
- Lack of or unavailability or inaccessibility to food
- Inadequate water, transport, and communication network
- Limited basic social services and amenities
- Persistent harsh climatic conditions like flooding, landslides, and drought
- Insecurity and high possibility of security threats
The Teachers working in hardship areas face a myriad of challenges; from lack of water, and flooding to hostile living conditions characterized by constant spates of attacks.
TSC Commuter Allowances
Every TSC-employed teacher receives a monthly transportation allowance based on their job group.

Teachers House Allowance
Here are the enhanced house allowances for teachers in different regions of Kenya:
Nairobi teachers now receive higher housing allowances as a result of rising rents in the city.
However, note that major municipalities strictly refers to those areas within major towns.
Other former municipalities and other locations in Kenya get compensated according to the following table;
TSC Annual Leave Allowance
Annual leave allowance is paid to all teachers once at the beginning of every year.
Teachers in job groups B5 and C1 receive a leave allowance of Ksh. 4,000, while those in C2 to C5 get 6,000. On the other hand, teachers in D1 to D5, mostly administrators, get paid Ksh. 10,000.
