The Teachers Service Commission plans to retool its secondary school workforce in January 2023 to prepare current grade six students for the transition to junior secondary school.
The Competence Based Training will take place as from 9th to 14th May 2022 and this training will will focus on these four key areas:
1. Integrated Science.
The content in this field will include physics, chemistry and biology .It has similar elements with current subjects such as general science . once retooled the chemistry, biology and physics teachers will comfortably handle this new content.Students interested in Integrated science will end up taking the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics pathway in Senior secondary school.
2. Health Education.
This new content includes environmental science,public health ,personal hygiene and nutrition. Teachers of Home science and Biology only need retooling in order to effectively teach the subject.
3. Pre – Technical and pre – career Education.
Pre – technical and pre – career will be offered in woodwork ,metalwork, technical drawing, electricity,electronics ,typewriting,shorthand,accounting,home management,textiles and clothing , and auto mechanics .
The technical teachers currently in some of the high schools will continue teaching this new content they include current teachers of Agriculture, computer studies ,woodwork,metalwork , business studies ,home science among others .
Teachers of home science and some mathematics/physics teachers will be prepared to handle the pre – technical and pre – career education preparing learners to join senior secondary.
4. Social Studies.
Areas to be covered here includes components of history, geography,governance and citizenship. Currently teachers of history, geography and social studies have prerequisite knowledge to effectively teach this content.
For effective and flawless transitioning the government through ministry of education has set aside 1.2 billion for the retooling exercise . This is to ensure that the teachers are up to date in handling the Competence Based Curriculum content .
The may training will be a five day face to face training but later on training on various competencies in new areas will shift to online training .
