Nancy Macharia, the head of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), has stated that training for teachers who will be in charge of junior high schools would begin on Monday and end on May 13.
Dr Macharia said the first training will involve 60,000 teachers from both public and private schools during the announcement of the KCSE exam results on Saturday.
She stated that the government is fully prepared to assure the success of CBC, which is currently in Grade 6.
“We want to show the country that we are properly equipped as teachers for Junior High School, which begins in January,” she stated.
She claims that by December, they would have at least 116,000 teachers in place for the January intake.
The TSC chief also announced that the government has established the Mwalimu Award to honor high-performing teachers.
“TSC’s proposal to introduce the award was approved by President Uhuru Kenyatta today,” she said.
TSC would hire 5,000 teachers, she added, after the National Treasury allocated Sh2.5 billion for teacher recruitment.
The country is in desperate need of 114,000 teachers, thus the commission will focus on sub-county schools.
