The education secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, has stated that schools will receive their capitation funds by Friday, June 9, 2023.

According to Machogu, who was answering questions from MPs on Wednesday, the money distribution was delayed.

I would like to inform all of the MPs present that the Treasury was meant to have delivered the capitation monies, which total Sh28 billion, before last Friday but there was a delay, Machogu added.

Machogu asserted that he had engaged with the Treasury to release the funds because the issue impacts not just him but the entire country.

He has confirmed that the funds would arrive at the ministry by tomorrow, following which we will be able to distribute them to all of the nation’s schools, according to Machogu. And I would like to inform the honorable members and the nation at large that he has in fact confirmed that, he continued.

And I’m hopeful that our schools will be able to get capitation funds by this coming Friday. We apologize for the inconvenience, but by the end of the week the money should be in the accounts of the schools.

As a result of rising commodity prices and delays in receiving capitation funds, school administrators have been vocal about their efforts to keep pupils in school.

Headteachers and principals encouraged the government to release school capitation funds, admonishing that failing to do so could result in the liquidation of the institutions.

They argued that the government urgently needs to assist in the present circumstance because they are currently forced to buy things on credit owing to a lack of cash.

These comes after schools threaten to close any time soon due to lack of capital to buy food and other essentials requirements in the school.
