The Kenya National Parents’ Association proposed that the 200 headteachers, who were named in the school fee saga , be sacked from their current positions.

According to the association, more than 200 principals from public secondary schools violating fee guidelines provided by the Ministry of Education should not continue holding those positions as they are straining parents unnecessarily.

The parents’ association forwarded the names to CS Magoha after the principals remained adamant that the proposed fees must be paid in full.

The Kenya National Parents’ Association chairman, Nicholas Maiyo, stated that most of the principals were from national schools.

He noted that the association collected views from parents before it came up with the list of notorious school heads.
“We discovered that some public secondary schools were even charging parents for non-essential goods for the learners like atlas and reference material just to milk them dry in the name of improving the standards of education,” complained Maiyo.

Some of the parents had complained that national schools were charging Ksh80,000 in fees, instead of the prescribed Ksh53,554 per year, while others were demanding extra payments in upwards of Ksh2,000 for teachers’ motivation.

Last year, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) was directed to decide the fate of school heads who were found liable for charging higher fees than that set by the Ministry of Education.

According to reports , many schools are charging higher fees based on old circulars while some schools are charging additional levies not contained in the government circular.

Reports indicated that:

  • Kisii School,
  • Nakuru Girl’s High School,
  • Mbita High,
  • Nyaburuu Girls’ High,
  • St Georges Girls’ Sec. School,
  • Kathiani Girls High School,
  • Kakamega High School,
  • Moi Kapsowar Girls High School and
  • Ofafa Jericho High School

charged students Ksh53,554 ignoring the new directive that caped fees at Ksh45,000.

Schools such as Nginda Girls, Karangare Sec. School and Nyamira Boys High, which were meant to charge parents Ksh35,000 stuck to the old fees circular charging parents Ksh40,535.
