The previous meeting between the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Teachers Union officials seems to have borne fruit, as the commission was set to deploy P1 teachers to teach in junior secondary schools, starting this January. If only they meet the following qualifications:
Before being deployed to a junior secondary school, the P1 teacher should have any of the following qualifications:
1. Diploma in Education
2. Higher National Diploma in Education
3. Bachelors Degree in Education
4. Post Graduate Diploma in Education
5. Masters Degree or PhD in Education
All applicants must have completed a secondary teacher education program and have taught at least two subjects.
At KCSE, you must have a mean grade of C+ (plus) or higher.
According to the circular seen by educationupdates.co.ke, KNUT directed all P1 teachers will only teach JSS unless they are deployed by the Commission but should not be forced.
Below is the circular to all P1 teachers
To: ALL Our PI Teachers
Preamble
We are saddened by the Cry of our members who are pl teachers that they are forced to have lessons in Junior Secondary School.
The cry reaching our office is that the head teachers have already allocated subjects in Jss to pl teachers.
Our call to ALL P1 teachers is that YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO TEACH JSS UNLESS THE COMMISSION DEPLOYS YOU.1f by Incase you have been allocated the Jss class. Call the Knut branch managers AS Soon as possible.
Any P1 Teacher with secondary teaching subjects who has taught at a secondary level for over ten years have needed experience to teach Junior high. We have seen people with high school better grades unable to add value to the learners in subcounty Schools. Grant those who have Secondary option opportunity to expedite and see great achievement. If not those with master’s degree in subject area have advanced good enough to handle Junior. We regret high TSC and Knut demean
P1 Teachers. They shall get favor of God elsewhere. TSC is not the only place to brag about while demeaning Teachers.
TSC commission should know that some P1 Teachers despite the grades they had, are so much well placed to add value to junior Secondary than they think of. How can academic dwarf pass University with upper class honor and above? Employ them and see if they won’t deliver to your wonder. Some are already in Universities as lecturer and do better than your c+ and above guys. Judge them from what they have achieved and current potential not teenager potentials. I am not a P1 . Just against the picture portrayed by the employer.
People are talking of grades how about those teachers who schooled under the old system using division 1,2,3etc,are they catered for?
The ministry shd give clear and direct structures of what is to be done.
The P1 teachers who had a mean grade C and had upgraded their certificates either in BED SCIENCE or BED ARTS were once well placed by the TSC for their teaching practice in various secondary schools, thus excelled very well in the 2 core subject areas. As a profound insight; let them also be deployed to JSS for an upward mobility of pedagogical skills.
