The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has added an additional requirement to the registration process for the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

In a circular dated February 25, 2023, Knec directed schools to register students for this year’s KCPE and KCSE exams.

According to the council, the registration period will end on March 30th. This year’s KCPE is the last exam.

The heads of institutions were requested to confirm the accuracy of all candidates’ registration data, including;

  • Correct spellings and order of candidates’ names as documented in their Birth Certificates,
  • Gender,
  • Year of birth,
  • Citizenship,
  • Subjects registered for and Information on different categories of candidates with special needs and disabilities (i.e. Visual Impairments (totally blind who require Braille / Low Vision); hearing impairment and physical impairment).

Knec, on the other hand, had not implemented the new criteria that it claims will make the registration valid.

Many schools had already completed candidate registration, and some had even published the nominal roll, so the necessity was no longer available.

Knec now requires KCPE candidates to provide information about their parents as part of the new requirement.

The examiner requires parents’ names and cell phone numbers to be entered into the online registration portal.

The circular also stated that examination centers with fewer than thirty (30) candidates would be hosted in exam centers identified by sub-county directors in accordance with the criteria it provided.

On the other hand, schools with fewer than five (5) candidates are not permitted to register candidates as independent exam centers for the 2023 examinations.

Knec recommended such schools liaise with their local sub-county directors of education (SCDEs) to select an approved KNEC examination center with more than five (5) candidates to enroll their students.

Heads of institutions were instructed to deliver complete registration documentation for the centres to the offices of their respective SCDEs on April 3, 2023, for verification by SCDEs and KNEC officers before submission.
