Teachers in primary and secondary schools may soon get pay increases and a review of their benefits if a proposal put out by the Teachers Service Commission is approved.
TSC CEO Nancy Macharia indicated that pay raises are necessary now that the economy has improved during her Tuesday appearance before the National Assembly Education Committee.
“The commission would wish to review the 2021-2025 CBA more specifically the salary component to motivate teachers,” Said Macharia.
Macharia requested that the committee chaired by Julius Melly enable TSC to participate in the evaluation process.
“It was agreed that the CBA would be changed midstream in light of the country’s improved economic circumstances,” she explained.
Because of the economic implications of COVID-19, public sector unions followed the SRC’s proposal for non-monetary CBAs in July 2021.
According to Knut, the recent salary increase was shared between the 2016–2017 and 2017–2018 school years.
The collective bargaining agreement for the years 2021-2025 included provisions for extended paternity leave and maternity leave.
Collins Oyuu, the secretary general of Knut, has previously stated that the CBA would be subject to revision after 12 months.
“We demand a sixty per cent increment because as it stands the recovery from Covid 19 has already been achieved,” Oyuu said.
60% Salary Increment
If the pay increase demand of 60% is met, a teacher earning Sh157, 656 per year in grade D5 will be paid Sh252, 249 instead.
The D4 teacher’s salary of Sh121,890 will rise to Sh195,024, the D3 teacher’s salary of Sh104,644 will rise Sh167,430, and the D2 teacher’s salary of Sh91,0401 would be Sh145,665.
The grade D1 and C5 teachers who earn Sh85,269 and Sh64,631 will get Sh136, 430 and Sh103, 409 respectively. For a C4 earning Sh52,308, the government will pay out Sh83,692, while a C3 earning Sh53,943 will receive Sh86,308.
Teachers in grades C2 and C1, who earn Sh43,694 and Sh33,694, respectively, are expected to receive Sh69,910 and Sh53,910, while those in grade B5, who earn Sh27,195, would pocket sh43,512 at the end of the month
