The program has enabled most Kenyans to access the basic education and improved literacy levels in the country.

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government has been in the front line ensure that all students benefit from the education.

Other than the free primary education, the government under the leadership of president Uhuru introduced the competence based curriculum that focuses on the talents and abilities of the students.

The daily Nation has reported that the National Assembly will this week debate a proposal to increase money allocated for learners in primary schools and ease the burden on administrators and parents.

The Budget and Appropriations Committee wants to give schools extra cash through the Free Primary Education programme, which will come as a welcome relief for headteachers who have for years complained that the Sh1,420 given to each learner annually is inadequate.

The education stakeholders have been urged by the the lawmakers to engage on discussion for the review of the capitation amount provided for public primary school learners and realign it to support the new curriculum without compromising the quality of education.

According to the resolution contained in Budget Policy Statement for 2022-2023 and the Medium Term report, the education stakeholders’ report should be submitted to the National Assembly within two months.

The proposal comes after it has been noted that the cost of education has gone higher hence need to review capitation for free education.

“The current capitation is not sensitive to the prevailing economic circumstances. There [are] persistent capitation deficits across the entire sector,” recommended the Education Committee that is chaired by Busia Woman Rep Florence Mutua.

If capitation for free education is increased, will it ease the parent’s burden of funding education for their children or it will be a burden on top another? Share your opinion.
