The introduction of internship program by the Teacher Service Commission was something that most people did not welcome whole heartedly.

This is because teachers felt that it was a way too low for trained teachers to be employed under internship after passing through teaching practice.

Yes it faced alot of in and out rejections but later became a profitable process especially to teachers who are  unemployed permanently by the Commission.

There has been improvement since it began .When it began , teachers under internship were paid 10k for primary teachers and 15k for post primary teachers. This currently has improved to 15k and 20k respectively.

Teachers who secure job under internship are expected to serve for a year though they are also entitled to seeking permanent employment when the commission announces the vacancies.

The most advantage of working under internship is the awarding of 30 marks come  during  permanent job interviews. This is a sign that teachers under internship are likely to secure the permanent employment compared to those who are not  willing to take part in internship.

It is now evident that for one to get a permanent and pensionable TSC job, he or she must pass through internship.

Internship program may be terminated under the following circumstances :

  • Substandard performance or failure to conform to the TSC standards of conduct as  prescribed for the Internship.

Internship programme is non-remunerative according to the  TSC internship agreement. However, teachers who will be serving as interns under TSC terms at the end of every month will be paid a stipend as may be determined by the Commission.

As a secondary school intern he/she is entitled to earn a monthly income of 20k. Despite receiving such amount they are subjected to two compulsory deductions namely :

  • National Social Security Fund (NSSF) Ksh. 200.00
  • National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) ksh. 750.00.

Total deductions  Ksh. 950.00.

A teacher in this category after all deductions takes home a total of KSH: 19,050.00.

Below is the Breakdown of secondary school intern teacher salary :

Break down Amount (Ksh)
1 Special Salary 20,000.00
2 NSSF Deduction 200.00
3 NHIF Deduction 750.00
4 NET Pay (After deductions) 19,050.00
