A total of 148 students from Ikonge PAG Girls Secondary School in Nyamira County have been hospitalized at various healthcare facilities due to severe stomach problems.
It is believed that the students became sick as a result of drinking contaminated water.
Claire Oyula, the Education Director of Nyamira North Sub-county, and other Ministry of Education officials are currently assessing the situation at Ekerenyo Hospital, where the students are being treated.
The incident comes few months after Mukumu Girls’ and Butere boys was closed following reports of food poisoning at the school.
Over 500 students were affected by a suspected case of food and water poisoning, which required medical attention.
On April 5, the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) confirmed that the students at Mukumu Girls’ High School had been afflicted with a dual infection of gastroenteritis and amoeba.
Many students experienced intense stomach discomfort and severe abdominal upsets
Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Susan Nakhumicha revealed that scores of students contracted the infection and had to be admitted to various health facilities within Kakamega.
